Takapuna Library
Following a successful re-development of the Mt Roskill Library, SGA was engaged by Auckland Council to revamp the Takapuna Library, at the heart of Takapuna Village. The building hadn’t had any significant refurbishment since its initial construction in the 1980s. Working with a tight budget, design moves needed to be simple but effective, solving problems of safety and usability.
Spatial rearrangement of circulation spaces in the entry foyer created a better transition zone into the library. Improved visual connection from the librarians’ office through to the welcome desk enables staff to greet visitors as they enter. Redesign of special collections, zones and shelving result in a spacious interior, which is more user-friendly.
The refurbishment has brought the library into the modern age, providing computers and wifi seating areas, and replacing worn fixtures and fittings. A fresh colour and material palette, new furniture and feature light fittings transform the building’s interior into a safe, welcoming space that benefits the community and appeals to a wide audience. Greater views of the water and colours that reference features of the local typography increase the connection to Takapuna’s unique setting which is characterised by a vibrant, well-used coastline.
Relatively minor architectural intervention and a well considered fit out has delivered a facility that responds to the needs of library users today.
