The site is in Leigh, a small coastal community north of Auckland. The original house started off as a modest kit set bach on piles with expansive ocean views and has been gradually remodelled by the client since 1990 into a comfortable 3-bedroom home.

The client’s brief was for a contemporary extension that maximised the outlook and settled into the natural environment. Having recently transitioned into retirement, they were looking to transform their property into a more semi-permanent home. They also wanted to increase the amenity to accommodate fluctuating visitor numbers during peak holiday seasons, whilst creating a snug coastal home for two during quieter periods. A magical space to inhabit, where architecture is very much the vehicle that enhances the sense of connection to place.

The home now has flexible windward and leeward living spaces to accommodate visitors and offers different living solutions that respond to the changing seasons.
